SafeMe

Safe pedestrian detection in fully automated vehicle traffic through microelectronic innovation

In the SafeMe joint project, the developers, manufacturers and distributors of radio frequency identification (RFID) systems ID4us, Ruhr-Universität Bochum and Fraunhofer IMS are working together to develop a tracking platform to protect vulnerable road users and thus create an important prerequisite for fully automated driving. The platform consists of a tracking device for installation in vehicles and passive locatable radio tags that can be integrated into clothing and shoes, for example. This solution represents a promising alternative to the camera-based approaches commonly used today, as it is significantly more energy-efficient and cost-effective and can also be used in adverse conditions, such as fog or backlighting, without any problems.
