Development of a multi-sensor solution for non-contact vital sign monitoring in nursing homes

Deteriorations in the patient's condition can be detected hours in advance by changes in vital signs. However, the monitoring of vital signs has so far hardly played a role in nursing homes, even though the resident structure of such facilities often has an above-average proportion of patients at risk. Early detection of deteriorating conditions can thus significantly improve care for those in need of nursing and reduce the subsequent cost of treatment. In the planned R&D project, an intelligent sensor system for monitoring vital parameters is to be developed as a bedside solution. The innovative combination of radar and image-based sensor technology is intended to enable robust, non-contact recording of vital parameters over longer periods of time for the first time. In addition, a documentation and early warning system is to be developed that is specially adapted to the requirements of the nursing sector and that issues situation-dependent warnings and action routines to the nursing staff.
